Mafia Island
A Marine Paradise

Combine a safari with Mafia
Mafia Island is the perfect choice for those who want to end their safari with peace and relaxation in an authentic and unspoiled setting. Tourism here is small-scale and the pace is slow, making the island a true hidden gem in the Indian Ocean.
Mafia Island is particularly known for its crystal-clear waters, its well-preserved coral reefs, and its fantastic snorkeling and diving opportunities. Between October and March, visitors can also snorkel with whale sharks—the world’s largest fish—an experience that many describe as unforgettable.
There are no large resort areas or bustling tourist districts here. Instead, you’ll find small, intimate accommodations, white-sand beaches, friendly locals, and an authentic Swahili culture. The island is also home to Mafia Island Marine Park, one of East Africa’s most protected marine areas, with a rich underwater ecosystem.
We'd be happy to help you tailor your stay and can recommend everything from charming beach lodges to accommodations focused on diving and marine experiences.

Days included in the package
Day 1: Arrival on Mafia Island
Today you’ll travel to the exotic Mafia Island, one of Tanzania’s most unspoiled and authentic island destinations. Unlike Zanzibar, tourism here is small-scale and the pace is much more relaxed.
Upon arrival, you’ll be met at the airport by our local driver, who will take you to your accommodations. Here, you’ll enjoy relaxing days focused on nature, the sea, and amazing underwater experiences.
You'll begin your stay at Butiama Beach Lodge, where you can relax and enjoy the tropical surroundings.
Day 2: Relaxation at Butiama Beach Lodge
Today you have a free day to enjoy Mafia Island at your own pace. Butiama Beach Lodge is located right on the ocean and offers spacious bungalows surrounded by palm trees and tropical greenery.
You can spend the day at the beach, take a dip in the Indian Ocean, or explore the surrounding area on foot. The lodge is located near Kilindoni, the island’s largest village, where you can get a glimpse of everyday local life and meet the friendly locals.
If you're traveling between October and March, you can snorkel or dive with the impressive whale sharks—the world's largest fish—which is an incredible experience.
Day 3: On to Basecamp Mafia
Today, you’ll change accommodations and continue on to Basecamp Mafia, located right on the beach within Mafia Island Marine Park, one of East Africa’s most protected marine areas.
Here, you’ll stay with the ocean right outside your door and be close to snorkeling, diving, and boat tours. Basecamp has its own dive center and is a perfect starting point for exploring the fantastic coral reefs and small islands in the area. We also recommend a visit to the nearby island of Chole, which is known for its history and ruins.
Day 4: Snorkeling in Chole Bay
Today’s itinerary includes a snorkeling trip to Chole Bay with Basecamp Mafia Dive Club. Mafia Island Marine Park is considered one of East Africa’s premier snorkeling and diving destinations, with rich marine life and well-preserved coral reefs.
The boat departs from Basecamp, and after about 30 minutes, you’ll reach the beautiful reefs. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to experience colorful corals, tropical fish, and impressive underwater life in crystal-clear water.
Day 5: The Last Day in Paradise
Today is your last day to enjoy Mafia Island. You can relax on the beach, go snorkeling or diving, or explore the surroundings at your own pace. For those who want to discover more of the island, there’s the option to take a walk through the beautiful mangrove forests or visit one of the small villages in the area.
Mafia Island has a rich history and has largely escaped mass tourism; here, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the local Swahili culture and enjoy the relaxed pace that makes the island so special.
Day 6: Return Trip
Today is the day to leave Mafia Island. You’ll be picked up at your accommodation and driven to the airport well in advance of your departure. Hopefully, you’ll leave the island with many wonderful memories.

Clothing tips for your safari in Tanzania
This may be good to keep in mind before going on a safari
- The roof of the safari jeep provides good sun protection, so full-coverage clothing is not necessary. Feel free to choose light, airy, and loose-fitting garments.
- Avoid bright colors, black, and dark blue, as these can attract insects.
- The Ngorongoro area is located at high altitude and can be quite cold, especially in the mornings and evenings. Therefore, bring a warm sweater or jacket.
- When visiting Moshi, Arusha, or other cities, it is advisable to dress respectfully.
- Bring shoes with thick soles that can handle uneven terrain and protect against sharp thorns.
Currency & payment in Tanzania
Tanzania primarily uses Tanzanian shillings (TZS), but USD is sometimes accepted. However, it is often more expensive to pay in USD.
- Withdrawing money
Tanzanian shillings cannot be exchanged in Sweden, so you will need to withdraw money locally. There are ATMs at the airport, in Arusha, and in Moshi. - Card payments
Most restaurants and hotels acceptcard payments, but there are still places where you can only pay in cash or where the card machine does not work. Therefore, it is important to always have cash as a backup. - Small bills
It is smart to have small bills for buying fruit, water, snacks, or souvenirs. Therefore, be sure to ask for small bills when you shop at the beginning of your trip. A good plan is to withdraw a small amount at the airport when you arrive, and then withdraw more as needed after the safari. - Haggle with consideration
Prices are often negotiable, but do so with respect. Avoid haggling just for the sake of it, as many sellers operate on very small margins.
South African cuisine is known for its great variety, reflecting the country's rich mix of cultures. Here, African, European, and Asian influences come together in flavorful dishes.
Typical ingredients and dishes
- Meat is a central part of the food culture. South Africa is known for its braais (barbecue evenings) where everything from beef and chicken to lamb and boerewors (the classic South African sausage) is grilled.
- Bobotie, a spicy minced meat dish with egg topping, is one of the country's most beloved national dishes.
- Seafood is common along the coast, especially in Cape Town, where grilled fish, mussels, and calamari are popular.
Wine and beverages
South Africa is one of the world's most prominent wine countries. The wine regions of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl produce internationally acclaimed wines, especially the unique Pinotage grape.
For beer lovers, there are several local varieties and microbreweries.
Fruit and vegetables
The country has a varied climate with good growing conditions. As a result, there is a wide range of tropical fruits such as mangoes, guavas, and passion fruit, as well as grapes, citrus fruits, and avocados, which are often used in cooking.
Mafia - Summer All Year Round
January - March
This is one of the best times to visit Mafia Island. During these months, whale sharks gather off the coast of the island, making it possible to snorkel with the world’s largest fish. The weather is warm, the sea is calm, and visibility underwater is often excellent, providing ideal conditions for both snorkeling and diving. The long rainy season begins in late March.
April - May
This is the long rainy season on Mafia Island. The rains can be heavy, and some accommodations are closed during parts of this period. The landscape is at its greenest, but the weather is less predictable, and it’s not the best time for beach life or water activities.
June - September
This is one of the most popular times to visit Mafia Island. Temperatures are pleasant, humidity is lower, and the days are usually sunny and dry. Conditions for snorkeling and diving are often excellent, and the island is still considerably quieter than many other beach destinations in East Africa.
October - December
Fall offers warm weather, pleasant ocean temperatures, and excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving. Starting in October, whale sharks begin to return to the area, and the chance to see these fascinating animals gradually increases. During November and early December, brief rain showers may occur, but they are usually short-lived and rarely affect activities significantly.
