Hermanus – unique whale watching experiences from land

Facts

Hermanus is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Cape Town, beautifully situated on Walker Bay along South Africa's south coast. What was once a small fishing village has developed into one of the country's most popular coastal towns. Hermanus is internationally renowned as one of the world's best places for whale watching directly from land, especially during the season when whales gather near the coast.
The town has a charming small-town feel with the sea ever-present, combined with a wide range of restaurants, cafés, and numerous galleries.

Nature and coastal landscapes

Hermanus is surrounded by a dramatic and beautiful coastal landscape with cliffs, beaches, and open views of the sea. The well-known Cliff Path winds its way along the sea and offers fantastic walks with the opportunity to see whales, dolphins, and seals at the right time of year.
The beaches in and around Hermanus vary from quiet bathing bays to more open stretches of coastline with powerful waves.

Whales and wildlife

Hermanus is best known for whale watching. During the winter months, usually between June and November, southern right whales can be seen from land. The town even has an official "whale crier" who signals with a horn when whales are visible from the coast.
In addition to whales, there is also a rich bird life and a vibrant marine ecosystem in the area.

Culture, wine, and experiences

Hermanus has a distinct artistic character, with many galleries, sculptures, and creative expressions lining the city streets. The Old Harbour Museum provides insight into the city's history as a fishing community and its relationship with the sea.
The town is also the gateway to the Hermanus Wine Route, where several vineyards are beautifully situated between the sea and the mountains. Here you can combine wine tastings with scenic views at a more leisurely pace than in the larger wine regions.

What makes Hermanus unique?

Hermanus combines dramatic nature, seaside experiences, and small-town charm in a way that is difficult to find anywhere else. The opportunity to see whales from land, along with great restaurants, art, wine, and beautiful walking trails, makes Hermanus a perfect stop along the coast.
